Mr. Race emphasizes client and community participation in developing planning and design solutions that are popularly understood and supported. Some of the tools used by Mr. Race to support an interactive process include gaming, cognitive mapping, environmental walks, situation analysis and scenario development. He uses these tools within overall participation programs consisting of workshops, study sessions and charrettes. Mr. Race utilizes this approach to create ownership for design solutions among project sponsors. He has been particularly successful with public sector clients where each of his many planning assignments have been unanimously approved by policymakers.

Communication of design and planning concepts is enhanced by Mr. Race's graphic hand and verbal skills. As a professional illustrator, he uses perspective sketches to demonstrate the likely physical manifestation of policy and conceptual design choices. Mr. Race is a good listener and a lively facilitator. He uses these skills in client and public forums to focus participants on issues critical to successful implementation of popular ideas.
